Legal Update:

NC House Bill 937 passed the House! There are many representatives that are getting their panties in a bunch about this bill passing, and the local media is eating it up.

3D Printed Guns:

Many of the gun grabbers are trying to create mass hysteria about the Defense Distributed Liberator pistol.

They are making arguments like these:

The pistol is unregistered! (Neither are most other pistols in the US)

The pistol is not traceable! (Well, It’s perfectly legal for me to buy a CNC mill, and make my own pistol out of steel, so what’s the difference?)

Could be printed by felons or organized crime organizations! (I don’t know too many gang bangers that are motivated enough to buy a 3D printer, learn how to use it, and make a single shot pistol)

The UK Dailymail printed one of these pistols, and took it on a train from London to Paris. Pretty interesting story.

After Defense Distributed posted the Liberator files, the Department of Defense made them take them down. This just helped these files to be distributed even further through torrent sites, and other means.

Ben and I discuss some aspects of this story that the mainstream media isn’t covering. I’m all for punishing the kid for bringing a gun to school, but why is it that an Assistant Principal in the same school district only gets a 3 day suspension and no criminal charges for bringing a gun on school property, and this kid may get expelled, prosecuted, and not allowed to graduate after trying to do the right thing?

Plug Of The Week:

This week Ben plugged the PopeHat blog. This is a legal blog that covers a lot of NC related legal issues. They are really good at taking a story, and going through all of the in’s and out’s of all sorts of legal things. Check them out at popehat.com.

Tip Of The Week:

Use a holster when pocket carrying! Many of us are switching to smaller pocket guns as summer is arriving, and you should really invest in a cheap pocket holster to cover the trigger guard of the pistol, just as added insurance.

Legal Update:

NC HB 937

NC House Bill 937 is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday, April 30, 2013!

This is the restaurant carry bill that we have been waiting for, and have been promised for several years. In addition to restaurant carry, this bill will remove the restriction on carrying a concealed handgun in places where admission is charged, as well as allow for handguns to be locked in vehicles on NC college campuses (Still no CCW on campus, but it’s a step in the right direction).

As mentioned above, this bill is scheduled for a vote on the floor of the NC State House on Tuesday, April 30th, 2013. Please take a moment, and use the below link to find out who your representatives are, and give them a call and tell them (or their administrative assistant) to support the bill!

Who Represents Me?

Morrisville, NC Gun “Buy Back”

Well, it turns out that the proposed Morrisville, NC gun buy back has been cancelled, because Mayor Jackie Holcombe (up for election later this year) believes there are “other options” to reduce gun crime…

Off Body Concealed Carry:

Carrying concealed off of your body may be a viable option in situations where you cannot carry on your person. I wouldn’t recommend just tossing a firearm in a bag, but rather having something like a Crossbreed Ohai, or another holster attached to the inside of a bag in order keep something from getting caught in the trigger guard, as well as keep the pistol oriented in the proper direction.

Another, albeit less desirable option, is one of the kydex trigger guard covers like the Raven Concealment Vanguard, or the MIC holster. These will cover the trigger guard, but they will not hold the pistol in a certain position in the bag. These little “holsters” are really easy to make as well if you have any kydex on hand.

Stick around the blog, and I’ll be doing a DIY tutorial on how to make a holster for off body concealed carry in the future.

Plug Of The Week:

This week we plugged NCLet.net. This is a great resource for keep track of legislation that is working its way through the NC general assembly. The really cool thing that we just noticed tonight, was once you go to the page for a certain bill, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for that bill to get any changes sent to your feed reader (I use Feedly on my Android phone…)

 <itunes:summary>Legal Update:
NC HB 937
NC House Bill 937 is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday, April 30, 2013!

This is the restaurant carry bill that we have been waiting for, and have been promised for several years. In addition to restaurant carry, this bill will remove the restriction on carrying a concealed handgun in places where admission is charged, as well as allow for handguns to be locked in vehicles on NC college campuses (Still no CCW on campus, but it's a step in the right direction).

Morrisville, NC Gun "Buy Back"
Well, it turns out that the proposed Morrisville, NC gun buy back has been cancelled, because Mayor Jackie Holcombe (up for election later this year) believes there are "other options" to reduce gun crime...
Off Body Concealed Carry:
Carrying concealed off of your body may be a viable option in situations where you cannot carry on your person. I wouldn't recommend just tossing a firearm in a bag, but rather having something like a Crossbreed Ohai, or another holster attached to the inside of a bag in order keep something from getting caught in the trigger guard, as well as keep the pistol oriented in the proper direction.

Another, albeit less desirable option, is one of the kydex trigger guard covers like the Raven Concealment Vanguard, or the MIC holster. These will cover the trigger guard, but they will not hold the pistol in a certain position in the bag. These little "holsters" are really easy to make as well if you have any kydex on hand.

Stick around the blog, and I'll be doing a DIY tutorial on how to make a holster for off body concealed carry in the future.
Plug Of The Week:
This week we plugged NCLet.net. This is a great resource for keep track of legislation that is working its way through the NC general assembly. The really cool thing that we just noticed tonight, was once you go to the page for a certain bill, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for that bill to get any changes sent to your feed reader (I use Feedly on my Android phone...)

	NC House Bill 937 page
	NC HB 937 RSS link

Housekeeping:
The 3-Gun On The Cheap! series is now all in one place! Thanks for letting me know it was hard to find.

NC HB 976 “Gun Safety Act”

This bill was introduce last week in the NC House after the US Senate struck down Harry Reid’s Gun Control bill. I mentioned this in a blog post earlier this week that Sean over at NCgunblog.com did a good write-up on the bill. If you haven’t checked it out already, you should.

If enacted, this bill would do several things, such as a 15rd magazine capacity limit, it would repeal all of the castle doctrine laws, require liability insurance for Pistol Purchase Permits, and of course, universal background checks.

Boston Police State

We’re glad that the terrorists are dead or caught, but at what cost? There are several videos going around the ‘net showing citizens being ripped from their homes at gunpoint, and the police and National Guard soldiers storming into homes without consent or warrants.

Is it okay to suspend the Constitution when there is a possible terrorist on the loose? I’m not sure, but the video’s and pictures are rather stunning.

A picture I found on Facebook taken by a resident.

IDPA vs. USPSA, and other shooting sports:

We teased this last week, and it’s basically a continuation of our discussion from last week. We’ve noticed that a lot of people who shoot certain games identify themselves as an IDPA shooter, or a USPSA shooter, when in both cases they both could learn a lot by expanding their horizons a little, and getting out and shooting other games. Furthermore, if you are just a pistol shooter, maybe you should get out and try some 3-gun or other types of shooting matches as well.

Listener Voicemail:

Bob from Pittsboro, NC calls in, and asks a question about different types of malfunctions that can happen on the range. Ben and I discuss some of the common malfunctions that we’ve seen, and some of the malfunctions that don’t happen quite as often.

Plug Of The Week:

This week we plugged a YouTube user “Jrygrim“. He recently posted a really good video on head movement when shooting that uses some really cool motion capture technology to show how you can waste movement during your draw that will inevitably slow you down. Give it a watch, and if you subscribe to his channel, make sure let him know that you heard about his channel on Triangle Tactical!

Where We’ll Be:

Ben will be shooting the IDPA match at PDHSC on April 27th

Luke will be shooting the USPSA match at Sir Walter Gun Club on May 4th

Legal Update:

Last week we mentioned that CT was looking into passing some really bad gun laws, and since episode 21, those have been signed into law.

Beretta is looking at packing up and moving out of Maryland if they pass any more restrictive gun laws.

Building vs. Buying Competition Gear:

DIY Holsters and Gear:

Knifekits.com, and Old Faithful Holsters both sell holster making kits. I've also done several posts here on Triangle Tactical about making your own gear out of Kydex:

Legal Update:

There’s some funny business brewing in Connecticut with some new proposed legislation. They are proposing some really stupid laws, such as universal background checks, registration for all guns, permits for all guns, and (get this)… magazine registration.

What’s sad about this situation, is none of these things would have prevented the tragedy in CT, this is just more legislators using the tragedy to push gun control down the citizens throats.

Also, friend of the podcast, Sean Sorrentino from NCGunBlog.com crashed a Illegal Mayors Against Guns press conference last week.

How to get ammo in our current situation:

Steve from Clayton called in, and asked about where we are finding ammo, and how to find it these days.

Ben and I came up with a couple strategies that may help:

Figure out when the “ammo fairy” will be visiting your local ammo store (some have recommended checking Wal-Mart’s website for in stock levels)

Trading ammo. I’ve been doing a good bit of trading lately, I happen to have a lot of ammo for guns that I don’t own, so if you are in the same boat, try trading for ammo that you do need.

Watch for online deals at websites like gunbot.net, ammoengine.com, and if you are in the Carolina’s keep and eye on the Hot Deals and Group Buys forum at CSC.

Reloading, under certain circumstances. Presses and components are hard to find at the moment, but prices haven’t really went up.

Plug Of The Week:

This week, Ben and I both wanted to plug a new podcast that we recently discovered. Student of the Gun Radio is a fantastic show, and Mr. Paul Markel only has 4 episodes released right now, so you should be able to get caught up easily.
Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center BUG match

Ben and I both shot this match, had a great time. We both pushed each other to go faster and faster, which made for some interesting scores. (Ben ended up beating me) Boo Hiss…

If you are interested in the matches at the Wake Co. FETC, there are flyers at the range on the bulletin board with the info needed. The matches require pre-registration via email, so getting on the email list is needed. You must also have a valid range card for the range to shoot the competitions.

H2O Fowl Farms BUG Match

Saturday I shot the H2O Fowl Farms BUG match. There were several Triangle Tactical Podcast listeners on our squad, which was awesome, so thank for coming out guys! I hope you had a great time!

One new shooter on our squad had a pistol malfunction, and we found a pistol and ammo for him to finish the match. I believe he will be back for another match!

PDHSC IDPA

Ben and I both shot the PDHSC IDPA match on Saturday night, making Saturday a double header for me. This was the first time I’d done a double header, and it was a BLAST! I ended up winning SSP at the match (and I beat Ben), so it was a good night. We shot 6 stages indoors, and all of them were challenging in their own way. Lots or transition from far targets to near targets, which can be challenging in a competitive environment.

Legal Update:

NC House Bill 17 was stripped of the restaurant carry provision this past week. It has been suspected that this was the working of House Speaker Thom Tillis, but he has not yet responded to my email, so were not 100% sure.

Mr. Tillis has been advertising a new website, http://ncpriorities.com/. At the bottom of the page, there is a link that says “If you were elected to the North Carolina…” If you click this link, it will take you to Mr. Tillis’ Poll on what kind of legislation you want passed. Feel free to write in on the “other” section something like “Pro 2A Legislation”, “Restaurant Carry” or something of the like.

Colorado:

Bill 1224 was signed into law, and it looks like Magpul will be leaving the state. This legislation isn’t about reducing crime, if it was, the legislators wouldn’t have put an exemption in the law allowing Magpul to continue to produce PMAGS in state, and sell them in other states.

Federal Level:

Harry Reid has basically scrapped Diane Feinsteins Assault Weapons Ban. This is not a time to celebrate, because we have not won anything. We’ve essentially been kicked in the teeth, and told that we will only be punched in the mouth from here on out. That is not winning.

Keep calling, keep writing letters, keep sending emails. Do not allow any legislation for registration, universal background checks, or anything else pass. Stay vigilant!

Tip of The Week:

Draw, then move. It’s almost never a good idea in a match to move to a position, then draw the pistol. Ben goes into detail about why this is the case.

Plug of the Week:

This week, we plugged Sadie at GirlGoesBang.com. Sadie has a lot of good articles about getting into competitive shooting, and her journey in competitive shooting. Check her site out at www.girlgoesbang.com.

Why You Should Shoot Competitively!

Ben and I discuss several reasons why you should at least try competitive shooting. We cover several of the myths that people may have about competitive shooting, and dispel some myths as well.

March 23rd, there will be a BUG (Back Up Gun) match at H2O Fowl Farms in Dunn, NC. This match is perfect for new shooters! Ben and I will be there, so if you have any interest in getting started in competitive shooting, you should come to this match! More info in this thread at CarolinaShootersClub.com

Plug of the Week:

The plug of the week this week goes out to your local shooting web forum. Web forums are a great place to get information on competitive shooting, to get together with like minded folks, and if you are a new shooter, you can often find someone to mentor you through your first match.

If you are in the Carolinas, CarolinaShootersClub.com has a great competition section, with a lot of active members. Check them out!

Tip of the Week:

Keep your gun in your holster, until you are told to remove it! This is a trend that we have been seeing more and more at competitive shooting matches. If the Range Officer has not yet told you to make your pistol ready, leave it in the holster!

Mail Call:

Ben and I discuss an email from listener Jon, who asks us why we haven’t considered the Sig Sauer P239 as a concealed carry pistol, and he also has a good question about the Crossbreed Supertuck holster.

Mail Call:
Ben and I discuss an email from listener Jon, who asks us why we haven't considered the Sig Sauer P239 as a concealed carry pistol, and he also has a good question about the Crossbreed Supertuck holster.
Feedback!
If you have any feedback for the show, please shoot me an email at luke@triangletactical.net

There are also two ways to leave a voicemail so we can play your questions on the air:

Dialing (919) 295-6128 will connect you to the Triangle Tactical voicemail line, or you can click here to leave a voicemail from your computer!

Lastly, please join us on social media at Facebook.com/TriangleTactical and @triangletactica on Twitter</itunes:summary>

Interview with Sean Sorrentino

On this week’s podcast, I interviewed Sean Sorrentino from NCGunBlog.com.

New York Boycott

Sean has been keeping track of companies that have decided not to sell their products to law enforcement and government agencies in localities where the items are not legal for ordinary citizens to own. He’s calling it the New York Boycott, and the list is growing at an alarming rate!

NC Restaurant Carry

We talk about the possibility of NC getting restaurant carry in the current legislative cycle. We talk a little about how the legislature basically sold out NC gun owners last year, and what the thoughts are on this current session. Sean talks about the Luigi’s shooting in Fayetteville, NC that took place in 1993.

North Carolina SB124

Sean and I discuss Senate Bill 124, which is a bill that was introduced in NC recently that says the following:

Shoot Gun From Inside/To Harm or Incite Fear.

Unless covered under some other provision of law providing greater punishment, any person who willfully or wantonly discharges or attempts to discharge a firearm within any building, structure, motor vehicle, or other conveyance, erection, or enclosure with the intent to do harm or incite fear shall be punished as a Class E felon.

Interview with Sean Sorrentino
On this week's podcast, I interviewed Sean Sorrentino from NCGunBlog.com.
New York Boycott
Sean has been keeping track of companies that have decided not to sell their products to law enforcement and government agencies in localities where the items are not legal for ordinary citizens to own. He's calling it the New York Boycott, and the list is growing at an alarming rate!
NC Restaurant Carry
We talk about the possibility of NC getting restaurant carry in the current legislative cycle. We talk a little about how the legislature basically sold out NC gun owners last year, and what the thoughts are on this current session. Sean talks about the Luigi's shooting in Fayetteville, NC that took place in 1993.

Full Text on the NC Leg Website
Many have been discussing this bill, believing that this could have an effect on the Castle Law in NC that we fought so hard for in recent years. Sean gives us his opinion on this bill, and talks about why it shouldn't effect the Castle Law.

Concealed Carry Statistics
Finally, we discuss some interesting concealed carry statistics for the state of NC. Turns out that the listed number of revoked permits in NC isn't exactly accurate. Some permits have been 'revoked' and then re-issued for odd reasons, and others have been revoked because the permit holder is... dead.

Everyday Preparedness

If you are locked out of your car, how do you get back into it? Think about the situation before it happens, and come up with a game plan to get the car back open. Be careful digging around blindly in the door panel though, modern cars have a lot of electronics in the door, and you could really do a lot of damage, especially if you have airbags in the door. If your car doesn’t have an easy way to get into it, maybe you should consider hiding a key in an inconspicuous place so you can get back in.

Concealed Carry

Ben and Luke discuss concealed carry. We talk about the different guns we’ve carried and the criteria we look at when we choose a concealed carry pistol. Finally we discuss holsters, and all of the different ones we’ve used over the years. Ben has been using a lesser known holster (Concealco AKJ), and Luke really likes the Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe, and the DeSantis Thumb Break Scabbard that I modified by removing the thumb break.

Ben’s Concealco Holster:

In the future I’m looking at getting my hands on a Springfield XDs 9mm when they start hitting store shelves. Until then, I’ll probably keep carrying my Glock 17 or Glock 19. Ben has been carrying the S&W M&P 9c, and he hasn’t found any reason to switch to another pistol, yet.

We also talked a little about off-body carry in a bag, and some concerns about doing so.

Plug of the Week!

This week, we plugged GunClassifieds.com. They are a new site that is incorporating FFL’s, Average Joes, Trainers, Bloggers, etc. all into one place. There are options for FFL’s to setup their own online storefront, places for regular classifieds, as well as the option for premium listings. I really like what they are doing over there, so you should check them out at www.gunclassifieds.com!

Shooting Tip of the Week:

Ben talks about catching magazines during reloads, and why it isn’t necessary, and why you shouldn’t train yourself to do it. Just let them drop, they won’t break from hitting the ground!

North Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee II Meeting on SB28:

Ben talks about a North Carolina Senate meeting regarding Senate Bill 28, which is a bill that would seal the records of Pistol Purchase Permits, and Concealed Handgun Permits in the state. A lot was said during the meeting, and Ben sorts it all out for us. The sad part about this, was many of the Senators didn’t even know the current law, and how this proposed legislation would impact it.

You can see the meeting in it’s entirety below:

Proposed Legislation in CO limiting magazine capacity to 15 rounds:

Magpul is threatening to leave CO if a magazine capacity ban is passed into law in CO. This is pretty breaking news, and neither Ben or I can figure out whether this has been passed by the CO House, or if they have just taken a voice vote, and will be having a real vote on Monday 2/18/2013.

Also, as we reported last week, LaRue Tactical has come out saying that they will not sell firearms to Law Enforcement that are not legal for citizens to own in those localities. This is not the first time this has happened though, back in the early 1990′s Ronnie Barret made a similar move with the LAPD.

The sad part about this, was many of the Senators didn't even know the current law, and how this proposed legislation would impact it.

You can see the meeting in it's entirety below:

Proposed Legislation in CO limiting magazine capacity to 15 rounds:
Magpul is threatening to leave CO if a magazine capacity ban is passed into law in CO. This is pretty breaking news, and neither Ben or I can figure out whether this has been passed by the CO House, or if they have just taken a voice vote, and will be having a real vote on Monday 2/18/2013.

New Studio?

Yeah, I’m building a new “studio” for the Triangle Tactical Podcast. We cleared out an extra bedroom and I built a desk, and some other goodies for making it easier to record, and get good audio quality for the podcast. I’ve had the room all torn up for a couple weeks, and that’s why I’ve not put out any episodes for about 2 weeks. This is unfortunate, because I set a goal to record 50 episodes this year and I’ve already missed two weeks! Time to get on it!

PPC Competition

This past Wednesday I had the opportunity to shoot a PPC competition at the Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center. This was a type of pistol competition that I have not had the opportunity to shoot in the past, so when I heard they were starting a league, I jumped on my chance to give it a try. It’s a great competition, especially for concealed carry permit holders to shoot with their carry rig, and for those looking to get started in competitive shooting, it’s a great low-stress match to cut your teeth on.

Proposed NC Firearm Legislation

There are two bills that we need to keep an eye on here in NC. The first is House Bill 17, and the second is Senate Bill 17:

HB17

HB17 is a pretty good bill, which would allow concealed carry permit holders to carry in restaurants that serve alcohol. This is something we’ve been screaming about for years, so let’s hope that we can get this through. This bill also seals the records of concealed carry permit holders, and purchase permit holders so that we don’t have any more databases pop up like the one that WRAL created last fall, or the NY state one last month.

SB17

SB17 is a bill that would invalidate “non-resident” concealed carry permits from other states. I think this is being introduced as a revenue issue, but it will have a lot of unintended consequences for legal residents of the state that are not US citizens. Sean over at NCgunblog.com did a good post about this bill, you should check it out.

Call in sick, lie, cheat, do whatever you have to do to make it to the GRNC Freedom Rally on Feb. 5th at the NC General Assembly. This is an event being held to show our legislators (Who work for us) that we do not need any more regulations.

- Triangle Tactical is now a WTBGU! Partner! Please consider clicking on the banner from Triangle Tactical to WTBGU! and making your gun gear purchases with them. Balloon Goes Up is a NC based company and they sell a lot of good stuff.
ZSA Zombiefest Match

- This is the only shooting match I’ve shot recently. Shot my Mossberg 930, and had some troubles with the cylinder bore barrel putting enough pellets on the steel plates to get the plates to fall reliably. I then did one run with my M&P 9mm Pro, and ended taking 1st place in the 24 division.

SHOT Show

- I’m unfortunately not at SHOT right now, wish I was there, but I’m planning to be there in 2014. I’m seeing a few interesting new pistols coming out of shot:

Ruger LC380

FN FNS 5″

Everyday Preparedness

I screwed up. Hear my story about not having my tool box in the car when my car broke down last week. I got complacent over the past couple years and took my tool box out of the car, and it cost me this past weekend.

President Barrack Hussein Obama’s Executive Orders

I discuss these executive orders, and most of them are fluff, and BS just so he can say he did something. An executive order saying that he should nominate a director of the ATF? He really needs an executive order for that?
